Anyone who’s lived, or even just traveled to, a big city knows that commuting can be an unpleasant fact of life. Missed trains, cramped conditions, and weird smells are all things to contend with both before and after work. However, there’s an issue that until now had gone largely undiscussed on social media or otherwise. Women have been sharing stories on Twitter with the hashtag #commutingwhilefemale to let the world know that, in addition to those other unpleasantries, they also face sexual harassment in plain sight.
The hashtag and discussion come at an appropriate time, as reported sexual assault on subways has increased by 50% in just the last year. Below are some of the stories women sought to share.

Unfortunately, many of these creepy stories lie in a legal grey area, despite the fact that they clearly lie on the wrong side of an ethical line.
Fortuanetely, those brave enough to make the discussion public are enlightening those, especially men, who may have otherwise never known what women regularly faced.
